The Good Shepherd Vs The Humanist Chaplain

The despair of serving as a humanist chaplain.

Ever since I read about Bart Campolo’s announcement that he is an atheist and how he wants to give his life in service to others as a humanist chaplain, I have been perplexed about this vocation. I knew what a humanist was, but couldn’t quite wrap my head around a humanist chaplain.

The Clarity of MoS

This week’s MoS is up and in it the Ref Pack discusses the recent sad news that Bart Campolo, son of Tony Campolo, has renounced the faith. Yet his testimony is still instructive relative to a key Protestant concept.

One of the striking things about Bart Campolo's testimony to his loss of faith is the fact that it was the Bible’s teaching on the illegitimacy of homosexual acts which was a key element in his rejection of Christianity.   I say ‘striking’ because it is strangely refreshing to hear someone at least face up to the clear teaching of the Bible on the issue.  In a world where many seem tempted to twist the Bible in such a way as to avoid its obvious imperatives on the matter, such honesty is bracing.

Round and About

Good things at A Place for Truth

On the road this week, I've noticed some things worth reading/listening to over at Jon Master's den, A Place for Truth.  First, he is launching a new podcast, Theology on the Go, the first episode of which has my seminary colleague, Scott Oliphint, discussing apologetics.  Obviously, it lacks the magic of Aimee Byrd, but sadly not every podcast can have its very own answer to Marie Osmond. &nbs

No Longer Fashionable

The decline of the Young, Restless, and Reformed

There has been much handwringing lately over the fall of Mark Driscoll and demise of Mars Hill Inc. It is not my intention to pick on Driscoll or Mars Hill. But the Seattle mega-church and her charismatic pastor were the most public face of the Young, Restless, and Reformed (YRR) movement. How this happened is up for debate and certainly the factors contributing to this influence were many. But it did not happen because no one was sounding the alarm. There were quite a few raising concerns but they were dismissed, ignored, and even excoriated as haters.

Because It Is Now Officially Time To Start Thinking About These Things

"The Expected One"

Okay, so it’s official now. The Christmas catalogues are coming in the mail. Every year, the Christmas season seems to be stretched longer and longer by beginning earlier and earlier.

Reformation Reading

Just what you need: More Books!

Happy Reformation Day friends!

We value reading over here at Mortification of Spin. In fact we're pretty sure that there is no such thing as having too many books. So, from one bibliophile to many others I offer you the following list of excellent books dealing with the history and/or implications of the Protestant Reformation. This list is by no means exhaustive. For instance I am not including a list of biographies. Rather it is a small sampling of some of my favorites on the Reformation generally.

How Susan Hunt Beat the Evangelical Machine

She was cool when women's ministries weren't cool. And she's cooler than us all.

Last weekend I had the privilege to attend a women’s conference featuring Susan Hunt as the speaker. It was a small gathering at a quaint, PCA church in Frederick, MD. Faith PCA was hospitable enough to open their event to the local churches. And so 106 women from 15 different churches filled their modest sanctuary.

Upcoming Sermons on Homosexuality and Gender

Gender Confusion, Sexuality, and the Image of God

Sometime in the early Spring, Lord willing, I will preach a brief series of messages on Gender Confusion, Sexuality, and the Image of God. That's not an easy topic these days considering the fact that faithfulness to the biblical message regarding sexuality will get one branded a bigot.

What the Heck is 2K Anyway, and an Answer to Todd

The summary's in the title, people.

Good Question, Todd. I received some new interest in the topic, a little bit of pushback, and one really good suggestion. A pastor emailed me a suggestion about defining our terms clearly.
